Brief Synopsis:
When a young maiden who has never touched a sword learns she must defend her inheritance in a duel, she calls upon her domineering aunt – the finest blade anywhere – to help save her house and lands. As she meekly learns to fence, she struggles with a milksop suitor, a servant girl posing as a Prussian fencing master, a Prussian fencing master who thinks he is there to marry her, and a stodgy lawyer who expects her to be killed at any moment. Like all classic farces, everyone gets the ending they deserve in unexpected ways…but will they be satisfied? A fabulously fun, physical farce - with fencing!
Roles: 2 men, 5 women
Despite being set in 1760s England, we are looking for actors of all racial backgrounds and gender identities. All roles are available.
TROTHE PEPPERSTON - Female, 20s-early 30s, playing 15. Must defend her inheritance from all challengers but has no plan or skills to do so. Naive and lovestruck, she’s thrown around by everyone else’s plans but saves herself in the end. Has a brief swordfight/stage combat scene. Upper class British accent.
DUCHESS THEODOSIA PEPPERSTON - Female 40s-50s. Trothe's Aunt. The greatest duelist in all the land, she tries to protect Trothe. Tough and exacting, fiercely protective of her niece. Very physical role - requires sword play/ stage combat. Upper class British accent.
PENELOPE - Female, 20s-40s. Trothe’s servant and the brains of all the schemes to keep Trothe in her estate. Smart, loyal, constantly scrambling as all her plans go awry. Will speak some German. Will share a stage kiss with Luitger. Has a comedic swordfighting scene. Lower class British accent.
TILLY - Female, 20s-30s. Junior servant to Trothe. Not especially bright, but willing to try anything to help. Every plan seems to put her in danger. Impersonates the Prussian Meister. Requires sword play/stage combat - she is a good fighter. Lower class British accent.
LUITGER (ELEONORE) - Non-Binary or Female, 20-40s. The true Prussian Meister. Passionate, falls deeply in love with Penelope. Passes as male for much of the play, and has extensive sword play/stage combat scenes. Shares a stage kiss with Penelope. Speaks only German, but we need to get a sense of what is being said.
OSRIC - Male, 20s-30s. A foppish poet in love with Trothe. Dim but romantic, he hides a darker side. He has a brief stage combat scene with Trothe at the end. Upper class British accent.
LORD ABERNATHY - Male, 40s-60s+. A family friend who is very concerned with tradition and the rules of society. A stuffy mansplainer with great comedic timing. Speaks some German. The butt of a couple stage combat jokes. Upper class British accent.
