Dramawerks announces
The Regional Premiere of
Gilligan's
Island: The Musical
REALLY
Let's
let that just sink in for a minute.
.
.
Ok,
Yes. The utterly impossible has happened.
A small craft on a brief sunny sightseeing
tour less
than an hour and a half from land is overwhelmed
by rough seas
and all are washed safely ashore
on an unknown uncharted tropical paradise.
On
board are a mixture of a fabulously wealthy couple
whose toothpicks are bigger
and better financed
than the very boat they arrived on, a glamorous movie
star
in evening attire, a college professor able to craft
antigravity
perpetual motion subatomic transponders
from coconuts and bamboo, and the
quintessential
Midwest girl from next door that packed nothing
that covers
her midriff. (Oh, heaven thank you, Sherwood!)
But
that is not the impossible part.
After
40 years of syndication
-- mind you the commercial television itself is only
10 years older! --
There is now a certifiably hilarious live musical of it.
No,
not
but
I do still have a Google Alert for that.
We tracked down Sherwood
Schwartz's son and co-writer
Lloyd J. Schwartz in L.A. and worked out the
Regional Premiere for this summer.
Sure, it meant bumping another
show, Grotesque Lovesongs
by Don Nigro, but after sedating the production
team and sitting
them through just six and a half hours of the DVD box set
we were able to fool the guys that Dawn
Wells would
actually be here (Oh, if only....<sigh!>)
and then we promised
all the ladies that they get to dress like Ginger with
Mrs. Howell's diamonds, they wholeheartedly agreed.
We're
still working on how we handle this when the drug wears off.
We'll get back
to you on that.
Anyway,
make plans now -- no wait, heck with that!
