Understudy
Showcase
In this production, we were amazingly fortunate
to have not one but two fabulously talented casts. Late in the rehearsal
process, our Stage Manager and crew became unavailable. At this point our understudies
promptly stepped in to cover the gaps. This made rehearsals for an understudy
performance impossible.
As
it is unthinkable to ask actors to work that hard without a performance opportunity,
we arranged a showcase specifically for friends and family. These two talented
individuals had given so much of themselves to the piece with no stage time whatsoever,
it was only right. The only problem was, of course, who knew the show well enough
to run stage crew for them as they played to friends, family and fans?
Who
else would step up to volunteer but... the leads?
So for one magical performance,
open only to invited guests, everyone traded places. It was absolutely tremendous.
The inconspicuous people in black were suddenly center stage and acting their
hearts out brilliantly and the regular focus of our attention was suddenly a mysterious
and ninja-like machine unseen, making it happen, unlauded, unnoticed.
It
is what this crazy "Theatre" thing is all about.
